I came across this awesome short film designed to “Amplify public discourse on a diverse set of sustainability issues”. The film’s creator, Annie Leonard, is also the founder of The Story of Stuff Project to leverage and extend the film’s impact.

Check them out on Facebook here…they also have a very informative site. Their on-line community includes over 150,000 activists and they partner with hundreds of environmental and social justice organizations worldwide to create and distribute their material.

Sun Chips Biodegradable Packaging could have been an “Ugly Betty” for the brand

The Wall St Journal reports that Frito Lay, the snack giant of PepsiCo Inc, is pulling the biodegradable packaging it uses for Sun Chips. This follows a year-long outcry from consumers who said – GET THIS – that the packaging was too noisy for them!

The bag, made from biodegradable plant material is reputed to be 100% compostable though sales have seen a steady slide since the launch. It’s not the first compostable product we’ve seen recently. Take a look at gDiapers, the earth-friendly nappy from Oz.

You’d have thought consumers would have welcomed such a breakthrough idea. They haven’t. Quite the opposite. They’ve been merciless. Take a look at this for example:

As manufacturers take the first faltering steps towards sustainable business practices, perhaps more needs to be done to dig in and remind consumers that turning back the clock is going to be, quite simply, a long process of making trade-offs. Some of them will be “inconvenient”. Some, like the Sun Chips packaging, will be just plain weird. But All of them will be necessary.

A good marketer might have layered the “noisy” packaging into the broader communication agenda; used it as an “Ugly Betty” lead attribute – the thing people first recoil at but eventually come to love. At least I would have.
